(PRP) THERAPY
PRP therapy (Platelet-rich plasma) is commonly used in areas such as hair loss, wound healing and skin rejuvenation. It is one of the non-surgical methods used in hair loss treatments. PRP consists of a three-step treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed and then injected into the scalp.
- Step 1
The patient’s blood is drawn and put into a centrifuge which is a device that spins rapidly to separate platelet-rich plasma from the other components of whole blood.
- Step 2
The processing of the blood will take approximately between 12 and 15 minutes. When whole blood is spun in a centrifuge the blood will have separated into three layers:
– platelet-poor plasma
– platelet-rich plasma
– red blood cells
- Step 3
The final step is to inject the platelet-rich plasma into your scalp where you are experiencing hair loss. The whole process from drawing the blood sample to injection is typically an hour long.
Overall, PRP is safe and the side effects are minimal however itching, mild pain at the injection site, scalp tenderness and swelling may occur. PRP sessions are typically performed once per month. It may require 4-6 session to get the maximum benefit of PRP treatment. The treatment is recommended be repeated every year to preserve growth if the underlying cause is not treated. It is of upmost importance that the PRP treatment is performed through application kits produced by the biotechnology company and by specialist physicians.
